The Iraqi Interior Ministry reported a serious incident involving law enforcement and suspected drug traffickers in southern Iraq. The clash highlights the growing issue of drug trafficking in the region, raising concerns about security and public health.

On Saturday, a police colonel, who oversees the Anti-narcotics Office in northern Thi Qar province, sustained injuries during a violent encounter with suspected drug dealers. While leading a raid aimed at apprehending the suspects, the situation escalated when the accused opened fire on the police unit, resulting in a confrontation. According to the Interior Ministry, the officer was shot twice, once in the abdomen and once in the leg. Following the incident, he was rushed to a medical facility where he successfully underwent surgery and is currently reported to be in stable condition.
Outcome of the Raid
The operation concluded with the injuries of both suspects and the seizure of illegal substances and weapons. Law enforcement authorities confiscated one kilogram of crystal meth, a Kalashnikov rifle, numerous ammunition magazines, and five hand grenades during the raid. This significant haul underscores the ongoing battle against drug-related activities that have increasingly plagued Iraq over the years.
