Correspondence: Reflecting on the Assault on Israel and Celebrating Our Allies | Correspondence

On October 7, 2023, while I was enjoying time at Disney World with my family, I received alarming news: Hamas had launched a violent attack on Israel. This horrifying event immediately brought back memories of my previous visits, specifically my 27th trip to Israel a year prior, when I visited Kfar Aza, a kibbutz that had suffered immensely from previous assaults. I found myself questioning the fate of the individuals I had met there, as well as the therapy animals that had provided comfort to those affected by trauma along the Gaza border. Three years later, the echoes of that fear and uncertainty still linger.

The Reality of Ongoing Antisemitism

In a poignant statement, Yechiel Leiter, Israel’s ambassador to the United States, emphasized that the events of October 7 were driven by an ideology that glorifies violence against Jews and denies the existence of Israel. This harmful mindset has far-reaching implications, as evidenced by the thwarted terrorist attack on FlyDubai and the disturbing rise in global antisemitism. Such enmity serves as a reminder of the collective threat Jewish communities face around the world today.

Lessons from Our Past

Throughout history, the support of our allies has been instrumental in overcoming such challenges. The timing of the attack, coinciding with Simchat Torah—a time of celebration and renewal in the Jewish calendar—only deepened the tragedy. Each year, this holiday symbolizes the conclusion of the yearly cycle of Torah readings and serves as a moment to carry forward the values handed down from previous generations. In light of the October 7 attacks, it becomes imperative that we honor the memory of those who lost their lives and boldly speak out whenever Jewish safety is at stake.

As we reflect on this crucial moment, it is essential to impart to the next generation that Judaism embodies more than mere survival against hate. It represents an active commitment to building communities, seeking justice, and consistently striving to illuminate a world often shrouded in darkness.

The Importance of Unity

To all who have stood in solidarity with the Jewish community over these challenging years, your support has not gone unnoticed. We are grateful for your continued commitment, and we hope to maintain this united front. It is essential that we stand together, not just in times of crisis but as part of an ongoing effort to combat anti-Jewish sentiment.

October 7 was meant to signify an ending, but together, we can transform it into a catalyst for a more hopeful future for all. Let us harness the lessons of the past and the strength of our community to work toward understanding, support, and equality for everyone.
