From March to July: How Have Changes Emerged Amid the Resurgence of US-Iran Conflict? | Updates on the US-Israel Conflict with Iran

As tensions flare once more between the United States and Iran, air raid sirens echo across the Gulf nations. The fragile ceasefire that had tentatively held has now crumbled, escalating conflicts that threaten to destabilize the region.

Escalation of Hostilities

The recent uptick in hostilities can be traced back to July 6, when Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) attacked three commercial vessels, including a Qatari liquefied natural gas tanker, off the coast of Oman. The following day, the U.S. retaliated with strikes on Iranian military objectives, prompting Iran to unleash missile and drone assaults targeting military bases housing U.S. forces throughout the Gulf. The situation escalated further when U.S. President Donald Trump declared the ceasefire from April to be void, leading to the IRGC’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz—a key passage for global energy—citing U.S. interference.

In rapid succession, both nations engaged in back-and-forth attacks. The U.S. launched a barrage of strikes hitting various Iranian cities, mostly located along the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Jordan, and Qatar saw Iranian counterattacks as the conflict expanded, indicating that regional tensions may be escalating toward a broader conflict.

Are We on the Brink of Full-Scale War?

Analysts suggest that the conflict is shifting from sporadic strikes to a more sustained engagement, although the areas of conflict remain somewhat limited. Unlike the extensive and relentless air campaign that characterized earlier phases of the conflict, the current U.S. attacks have concentrated around the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s responses have primarily targeted military installations utilized by U.S. troops. Importantly, however, both nations are not completely ruling out diplomatic discussions. Trump has mentioned the importance of ongoing dialogue despite his harsh rhetoric.

Efforts are reportedly underway by Qatari and Pakistani intermediaries to mediate the situation. Meanwhile, Trump faces mounting challenges at home, especially concerning the need for congressional authorization for military action against Iran. The War Powers Act mandates congressional approval within 60 days of hostilities, posing additional concerns for Trump as public support for the war declines.

Differences in Current Hostilities

The intensity of the conflict has noticeably changed since earlier this year. The fighting back in February and March shattered the belief that commercial hubs in the region were shielded from such turmoil. At that time, a U.S. airstrike tragically resulted in the deaths of 168 children in a school in Iran. Meanwhile, Iranian missiles targeted high-profile locations in Dubai, demonstrating the conflict’s widespread impact.

Currently, both the U.S. and Iran appear to be exercising restraint in selecting targets. Civilian infrastructure has largely been spared, unlike earlier phases of the conflict when numerous civilian sites were attacked. The current military objectives seem to focus more on gaining leverage over the Strait of Hormuz rather than broad-scale military devastation.

One significant factor differentiating this ongoing round of conflict is Israel’s apparent distance from direct involvement. In previous altercations, Israel played a crucial role, yet they have not engaged in the recent hostilities against Iran. Diplomatic agreements—such as the one facilitated by Islamabad to cease hostilities—have introduced complexities, especially as both Tehran and Washington cite violations of their terms against each other.

In summary, while conflicts persist and tensions remain high, there is an ongoing chance for diplomacy to take root as both the U.S. and Iran navigate their objectives and boundaries. However, achieving mutual understanding and cooperation poses an uphill battle, as each nation grapples with differing priorities and interpretations of their agreements. Negotiating peace will likely require significant effort, as the specter of war continues to loom over the region.
