A recently inaugurated agricultural moshav named Bitron has emerged in the Jordan Valley, marking a noteworthy addition to Israel’s community landscape. This initiative, part of the “Otef Israel” settlement program, took place just before Rosh Hashanah, signifying a new beginning for its residents.

The establishment of Bitron was spearheaded by Hashomer Hachadash alongside multiple partners, including the Ministry of Settlement and National Missions, the Settlement Division, and the Jordan Valley Regional Council, among others. Approximately 20 founding families participated in the inauguration, arriving from various regions of the country to mark this significant occasion ahead of the Jewish New Year.
Historical Significance of Bitron
Hashomer Hachadash emphasizes that Bitron is the first new agricultural moshav to be formed in Israel in the last two decades. The creation of this community is part of a broader initiative aimed at developing settlements along Israel’s eastern border in response to security challenges, particularly following increased tensions after the October 7 attacks.
Preparing for Community Life
Prior to the formal ceremony, numerous participants gathered at the site, including members of Hashomer Hachadash’s youth movement, collaborating to prepare the area for future residential and communal activities. These early efforts involved organizing housing structures, thereby laying the groundwork for a sustainable community.
Expanding the Vision for New Communities
In concert with the establishment of Bitron, Hashomer Hachadash also initiated the formation of “Mitzpe Yehonatan” in Arad, named after a slain commander. Currently, around 20 families inhabit this new site, indicating a trend toward revitalizing and reinforcing communities in underserved areas. The president of the Taib Foundation stated that these initiatives underscore the vital link between agriculture, settlement, and national resilience, especially in the wake of recent events.
