A recent delegation from the World Jewish Congress (WJC) made headlines by meeting with Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša and other high-ranking government officials in Ljubljana. This visit marks a significant moment, as it is the first of its kind by a prominent international Jewish organization since Israel established its first embassy in Slovenia.
Strengthening Diplomatic Ties
The WJC’s visit closely follows the opening of Israel’s inaugural resident embassy in Slovenia on September 9, with Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar leading the inauguration alongside Slovenian Foreign Minister Tone Kajzer. In a bid to foster bilateral relations, both nations signed a cooperative program that spans various sectors, including education and culture, with plans extending through 2030. This initiative aims to fortify the relationship between Slovenia and Israel, underlining their commitment to decades of collaboration.
New Developments in Diplomacy
In addition to the embassy, Israel has appointed Ruth Cohen-Dar as its first resident ambassador to Slovenia. Cohen-Dar’s previous roles included serving as the non-resident ambassador to Slovenia and Malta, where she was also involved in matters related to antisemitism and Holocaust remembrance. The WJC delegation led by CEO Sara Friedman, along with several other prominent members, expressed their commitment to rejuvenating the ties between Jewish communities and Slovenia after a recent change in government.
The WJC emphasized that this visit is a calculated step to deepen engagement with Slovenia, particularly in light of new diplomatic relations formed in the wake of Janša’s governmental return. Janša has prioritized rebuilding ties with Israel, moving towards more stable political and economic relations after a time of tension.

Friedman stated, “There are moments in diplomacy when just showing up carries significance.” She highlighted the importance of this visit to demonstrate the global Jewish community’s commitment to fostering relationships with nations like Slovenia. This meeting stands in stark contrast to a prior mission in April 2024, during which the WJC reported a lack of engagement from Slovenian officials. That visit was marked by disappointment, as Jewish representatives faced resistance from the previous government, hinting at the complexities of international diplomatic relations and the challenges faced by smaller Jewish communities globally.

In addressing these challenges, the WJC representatives encouraged Slovenia to appoint a special envoy dedicated to combating antisemitism.
