Israel’s ongoing conflict in Lebanon has left a devastating impact on children, according to alarming reports from Save the Children. Despite efforts by the Lebanese government to broker a ceasefire with Israel, children continue to bear the brunt of violence and instability. The Human Cost of Conflict
Save the Children has documented an average of seven child fatalities each day in Lebanon since March. The organization reports that, notwithstanding supposed agreements to end hostilities, Israel has persisted in targeting civilian infrastructure. In the past six months alone, the humanitarian toll has escalated dramatically, with over 4,300 individuals killed and more than 12,000 injured, including at least 257 children who have lost their lives and 1,039 more injured.
Nora Ingdal, the director of Save the Children in Lebanon, emphasized that the international community must intervene to prevent the normalization of violence, displacement, and the ongoing destruction of vital civilian structures. Children are especially vulnerable and deserve protection under any circumstances, a commitment that the world must uphold.
Displacement and Ongoing Struggles
The repercussions of this conflict have led to massive displacement, with peak figures showing over a million people forced to flee southern Lebanon. As of now, approximately 348,800 individuals still cannot return home, even after the ceasefire agreement signed in June. These circumstances are dire, exacerbated by the lack of access to essential services such as education and healthcare, as revealed by a recent assessment conducted by Lebanon’s Ministry of Education and Higher Education.
Despite a framework agreement reached between the Lebanese government and Israel to halt hostilities, the situation remains precarious. Hezbollah, the Lebanese armed group, has refused to accept any agreement unless Israel fully withdraws from Lebanese territory. Continuous violations of the ceasefire have raised fears of renewed conflict, making it difficult for families and children to feel secure.
Critical Need for Educational Support
The conflict has not only affected the physical safety of children but has also jeopardized their education. Save the Children warns that around 100,000 children in Lebanon are at risk of missing the upcoming school year due to damaged or destroyed school facilities. The recent assessment indicated that 340 schools have faced severe damage in just six months.
