The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has addressed concerns regarding the disappearance of a female traveler, Ms. Saratu Jibo Yusuf, who reportedly went missing after arriving in Doha on a Qatar Airways flight. The authority stated that CCTV footage has confirmed her safe arrival, luggage collection, and departure from the terminal.
The Concern Raised by Family
The issue was brought to public attention by her brother, Jonathan Jibo, who posted on social media to express his worries. According to him, Ms. Yusuf, a 37-year-old with ticket number 157-2377854991, had not been reachable for over 48 hours after boarding flight QR 1408 from Lagos to Doha on Tuesday. He explained that their last communication occurred when she was on the plane, using in-flight Wi-Fi.
“It’s been over 48 hours. My sister boarded a flight from Lagos to Doha. The person waiting for her at the airport hasn’t seen her, although the flight landed safely,” he reported. Airline officials informed the individual waiting at the airport that Ms. Yusuf had collected her luggage and left the terminal, raising further anxiety among her family members.
Family’s Efforts and Background Information
Jonathan described his sister as an experienced airport worker with nearly 12 years in the industry who was familiar with travel procedures. He expressed his growing concern, stating, “I can’t reach her phone. Her online status is inactive. This was her first time flying abroad, and she didn’t know anyone in Qatar.” He further explained that she had made accommodation arrangements well in advance and was scheduled to begin work shortly after arriving in Doha. The trip was organized by a family friend, adding to the worries surrounding her sudden lack of communication.
In his attempts to locate his sister, Jonathan mentioned that he had urged the travel agent to report the matter to the appropriate authorities and requested access to the CCTV footage that could provide crucial details about her disappearance. He expressed his emotional distress, particularly concerning their mother, who has been anxiously waiting for updates.
NCAA’s Response and Ongoing Investigations
In response to the mounting concerns, NCAA spokesman Michael Achimugu confirmed the details communicated by the airline. “The CCTV footage shows your sister arrived safely, picked up her bags, and exited the terminal,” Achimugu reassured Jonathan. However, he noted that investigations were somewhat delayed due to the weekend, which is akin to public holidays in Qatar.
Achimugu stated that authorities would soon confirm whether Ms. Yusuf had checked into her hotel or utilized the hotel’s pick-up service. He explained that each Qatar visa is linked to a specific hotel reservation, allowing for easy verification of a traveler’s whereabouts. “DISCOVER QATAR will determine if she checked in at her booked hotel,” he affirmed.
In light of fears expressed about potential human trafficking or forced labor, Achimugu assured Jonathan that Qatar Airways had acknowledged the situation. He added that if it turned out Ms. Yusuf did not arrive at her hotel, authorities would initiate a manhunt, as tracing individuals is relatively straightforward once they have entered Doha.
