IOC announces India and Qatar among seven candidates vying to host the 2036 Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has officially recognized India and Qatar as contenders for the 2036 Summer Olympics, alongside five other nations. This announcement emphasizes the growing ambitions of these nations to host the prestigious event, with a decision expected to be made in 2029 through a vote among the IOC’s extensive membership. Key figures involved include Nita Ambani from India’s wealthiest family and the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

Main Cities Behind the Bids

India’s proposal primarily revolves around Ahmedabad, a city set to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030. Remarkably, it boasts the world’s largest cricket stadium, named after Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On the other hand, Qatar’s history of hosting international championships in various Olympic sports, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup, enhances its appeal. Their bid could potentially extend beyond Doha, involving neighboring Gulf states for some events.

In addition to India and Qatar, South Korea’s bid would focus on Seoul, a city that successfully hosted the Summer Olympics in 1988, and span across the nation. Germany has chosen Munich as its candidate, returning to a city that held the Games in 1972. South Africa seeks to make history with a national bid centered on Cape Town, marking the first time an African country would host the Summer Olympics since the event’s inception in 1896. Hungary and Turkey have put forth Budapest and Istanbul, respectively, as their proposed host cities. The IOC has announced that a shortlist of candidates will be finalized in March, which will allow for the development of detailed proposals.

A Long Recruitment Process for the Host City

The IOC aims for a decision to be made by 2029, reverting to its traditional timeline for selecting a host city, as the recent trend of appointing hosts far in advance without competitive voting has drawn criticism. This process allows for a rigorous evaluation of each bid while ensuring that the IOC’s members have a significant say in the final choice.

IOC President Kirsty Coventry, a celebrated swimmer, has expressed the importance of keeping athletes at the center of the preparations. The deadline for national Olympic committees intending to join the 2036 bidding process is scheduled for October 31, with a comprehensive guide for bidders also released recently. The organization will strive to keep the selection process transparent and open, a shift from practices under the former leadership of Thomas Bach.

Emphasis on Membership Involvement

IOC members have conveyed a strong desire for greater involvement in the decision-making process compared to previous years. They want the ability to review a variety of candidates on the ballot, instead of merely affirming a single choice put forth by the executive board. The esteemed membership of the IOC includes sports officials, athletes, royals, political leaders, and prominent figures like Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh.

As cities around the world vie for the opportunity to showcase their capabilities on the global stage, the selection of the 2036 Olympic host will certainly draw significant interest and debate over the coming years. The competition is hot, and as nations present their cases, the excitement surrounding this iconic event continues to grow.
