Doha Readies for Groundbreaking Musical

Doha, Qatar, is set to host the world premiere of “Again,” a powerful new musical that delves into the narratives of struggle for freedom and self-determination in South Africa and Palestine. This production, staged by Qatar Museums (QM), is not just a performance but a critical exploration of interconnected histories that resonate deeply with audiences today.

Artistic Collaboration and Vision

“Again” emerges from the innovative mind of writer and historian Tariq Ali. Developed collaboratively by the Isango Ensemble—recognized for their Olivier Award-winning performances—and Palestinian writer Sondos Sabra, the musical showcases South African talents alongside poignant testimonies from Palestine. Set to take place at the Abdul Aziz Nasser Theatre in Souq Waqif from October 27 to 31, 2026, this production is presented in collaboration with Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, aiming to foster meaningful dialogue through live theatre.

Under the direction of Mark Dornford-May, Co-founder and Artistic Director of the Isango Ensemble, the production also features Max Roberts as Associate Director and choreography by Lungelo Ngamlana. This marks the Isango Ensemble’s inaugural performance in the Gulf region, highlighting how their unique storytelling can transcend geographical and cultural boundaries.

A Powerful Message of Connection

Zeina Arida, Director of Mathaf, emphasized the significance of the production, explaining that “Again” challenges audiences to engage with the complexities of history rather than viewing them from the sidelines. The artistic endeavor puts both South African and Palestinian narratives on a shared platform, urging listeners to actively engage with the stories being told. This alignment perfectly reflects Mathaf’s mission to host vital conversations through cultural expressions, making it a fitting venue for such a groundbreaking project.

Director Mark Dornford-May elaborated further on the concept, stating that the musical aims to bridge two histories often viewed in isolation. The Isango Ensemble brings authentic experiences of apartheid and resistance to the storytelling, merging these with Sabra’s Palestinian narratives. The goal is to create an artistic piece that resonates with audiences, emphasizing the universality of human experiences while respecting the distinctiveness of each narrative.

Testimonies of Loss and Survival

For Sondos Sabra, the writing process was deeply personal. She aimed to capture moments that could easily slip away—memories of loss and displacement. Hearing her words embodied by others brings a mix of pain and solace; it serves as a testament to resilience. For her, the act of storytelling is not just about preserving history but a form of survival itself—reinforcing the idea that as long as a story can be told, it remains alive and relevant.

Tariq Ali, the visionary behind this project, expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort that has brought “Again” to life. He envisioned a fusion of two important histories that would reflect shared struggles and triumphs. This collaborative endeavor has garnered support from various institutions, including Qatar Museums and Mathaf, illustrating a commitment to highlight underrepresented voices through art.

A Cultural Milestone

Combining music, choreography, and spoken word, “Again” is a 90-minute production that intricately weaves together the histories of South Africa and Palestine. It draws on Sabra’s writings, including new pieces and selections from her diaries in “Voices of Resistance: Diaries of Genocide.” Featuring a 15-member ensemble from South Africa and the United Kingdom, the musical intricately merges lived experiences of apartheid, conflict, and resistance.

Developed over two years across multiple regions, “Again” includes original compositions, choral elements, physical movement, and live testimonies, enriching the audience’s experience. Qatar Museums is committed to nurturing transformative cultural projects that connect global narratives and elevate diverse perspectives. This performance is part of the Qatar Creates Fall/Winter 2026-27 season and aligns with the ongoing Evolution Nation campaign, celebrating Qatar’s rich 50-year cultural journey.
