Conference on Palestinian Childhood Addresses Israeli Occupation

On September 14, the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) convened a significant conference focused on the plight of Palestinian children under Israeli occupation. The event aimed to analyze the educational and cultural violations imposed by the ongoing conflict and to explore ways to bolster protective measures for these vulnerable individuals.

A Gathering of Experts and Stakeholders

The two-day conference brought together a diverse array of stakeholders, including experts, educators, and both regional and international ambassadors stationed in Tunisia. This collaborative effort underscores a collective commitment to addressing the challenges faced by Palestinian youth, acknowledging that their struggles extend beyond mere statistics. As ALECSO Director Mohamed Ould Amar emphasized during the opening session, the focus should be on the individual lives of Palestinian children—each with their own dreams and aspirations—who are entitled to live free from fear and deprivation.

The Impact of Conflict on Education and Culture

Ould Amar highlighted the severe repercussions of the ongoing conflict, particularly in the Gaza Strip, where educational and cultural systems have faced enormous obstacles. He articulated the lasting damage inflicted on children and institutions, characterizing it as a humanitarian and legal responsibility for the broader Arab and international communities to take action. The urgency of protecting the right to education and preserving cultural heritage was a central theme of the discussions.

Collaborative Efforts for Resilience and Protection

ALECSO is committed to collaborating closely with the State of Palestine, neighboring Arab countries, and international partners to ensure that education remains accessible to all Palestinian children. Ould Amar stressed the importance of supporting educational and cultural institutions, enhancing the resilience of families, teachers, and students in the face of adversity. This initiative aims not only to maintain continuity in education but also to empower communities to navigate the complexities imposed by the conflict.

Comprehensive Approach to Address Abuses

The conference aimed to comprehensively tackle various dimensions affecting Palestinian children, including educational, cultural, legal, mental health, and media-related aspects. By enhancing coordination among Palestinian, Arab, and international organizations, the event sought to promote advancements in education, culture, and children’s rights. This multifaceted approach is critical in understanding the broad spectrum of challenges and coordinating effective responses.

Building an Arab Dialogue Platform

A key objective of the gathering was to establish a platform for Arab dialogue and expertise sharing. The conference aimed to transition from merely observing and documenting abuses to fostering actionable measures for protection and advocacy. By developing professional certifications and documentation, participants sought to create effective mechanisms aimed at ensuring the continuity of education and addressing learning loss among Palestinian children.

This conference not only highlighted the dire circumstances faced by Palestinian youth but also reaffirmed a collective commitment to nurturing a brighter future for them—one where they can safely pursue their dreams and contribute meaningfully to their society.
