The annual Hajj pilgrimage, an essential rite in Islam, has commenced in Saudi Arabia. More than 1.5 million pilgrims have traveled from various countries to partake in this momentous spiritual journey, all while the world grapples with a precarious ceasefire in the Iran conflict and ongoing global energy challenges.

Saleh bin Saad al-Murabba, the commander overseeing the passport operations for Hajj, announced that over 1.5 million pilgrims had arrived in the kingdom by Friday, with additional pilgrims expected in the following days. As pilgrims prepare to transition to the expansive tent city of Mina, many have been circling the Kaaba, the iconic cube-shaped structure within the Grand Mosque, despite the scorching heat. To aid in combating the high temperatures, volunteers distribute water and misting fans, while some pilgrims use umbrellas for shade. Youssef Chouhoud, a political scientist from the United States, remarked on the pilgrimage’s intensity, describing it as a significant reset for him. “For many, this is perhaps the most challenging experience of their lives, but its true value lies in its difficulty,” he affirmed.

Chouhoud also observed the camaraderie amongst pilgrims, noting the spirit of charity as individuals help one another throughout their journey. Discussions about a “memorandum of understanding” aim to potentially reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which could alleviate some of the energy concerns arising from recent geopolitical tensions.
In spite of the prevalent uncertainties, pilgrims are finding solace and strength in their faith. The high point of the Hajj experience occurs on Tuesday when participants will gather at the plain of Arafat.
