Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has recently underscored Turkiye’s willingness to provide military assistance to Saudi Arabia amidst escalating Houthi attacks in Yemen. This statement comes as geopolitical tensions rise, with the ongoing conflict raising concerns about regional security.
Saudi Arabia’s Military Needs in Light of Houthi Attacks
Fidan highlighted that Saudi Arabia may face military challenges due to the intensified actions of Yemen’s Houthi rebels. He indicated that Turkiye is open to exploring ways to support the Kingdom, particularly under a trilateral defense agreement established with Pakistan. This collaboration underscores both countries’ commitment to bolster Saudi Arabia’s defense capabilities during a time of instability.
In an interview with Turkish broadcaster NTV, Fidan expressed that the situation is untenable for Saudi Arabia, which aims to avoid becoming entangled in the broader US-Iran conflict. He emphasized that Riyadh does not wish to participate in escalating tensions that could further destabilize the region.
The Escalation of the Yemen Conflict
The war in Yemen has seen Houthi forces and Saudi Arabia escalating their exchanges of attacks, with the Houthis gaining control over key territories, such as significant portions of the Red Sea coast and the strategically vital Bab al-Mandeb Strait. The ongoing hostilities have prompted discussions among regional powers about the necessity for collective military action to deter further aggression from Iranian-backed forces.

The Mecca Joint Defence Agreement
The trilateral defense agreement, referred to as the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, was solidified on August 7 by leaders from Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Pakistan. This accord, termed the Mecca Defence Alliance, was designed to foster cooperation among the three nations, establishing a framework for mutual support in the face of external threats.
Under this agreement, an armed assault against any member state is considered an assault on all three, reinforcing their collective security posture. Fidan noted that the alliance is built on the principles of respecting sovereignty, territorial integrity, and refraining from interference in domestic affairs; it has also left the door open for other nations to join the coalition.
Concerns Over Agreement Efficacy
While the Mecca Defence Alliance represents a significant step towards collaboration among these nations, analysts remain skeptical about the actual efficacy of the pact. They point to the absence of a cohesive command structure, which is vital for a robust defense system like NATO. Questions linger regarding the operational mechanisms that would trigger the mutual defense clause, which remain undefined.
