9,000-Year-Old Copper Workshop Discovered at Ancient Çayönü Site in Turkey

Archaeologists have recently made significant discoveries at one of the most prominent Neolithic sites in Southwest Asia. The excavation at Çayönü Hill, located in the Ergani district of Diyarbakır, Türkiye, has unveiled a specialized workshop that dates back approximately 9,000 years. This site, occupied around 6900–6800 BC, provides insights into the organized production practices of early Neolithic communities.

The Discovery of a Neolithic Workshop

The excavation team, led by Associate Professor Savaş Sarıaltun from Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, has identified a workshop covering about five square meters in the western section of the Çayönü settlement. This area is believed to have been strategically designed for working with malachite and copper, as evidenced by its structured layout and specific findings. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Türkiye has confirmed the discovery, highlighting its historical significance as one of the earliest organized settlements in the region.

During the excavation, researchers uncovered at least six post holes surrounding the central working area, indicating that the workshop may have been sheltered by a lightweight roof or covering. The presence of a stone-paved surface suggests that this space was intentionally constructed for production activities, rather than being a simple accumulation site for various artifacts.

Evidences of Production Processes

Among the most notable discoveries within this workshop are 18 malachite fragments, with an additional 24 to 25 pieces found in the vicinity, leading to a total of around 42 malachite and copper items uncovered in the area. The materials retrieved included raw malachite, semi-finished pieces, copper beads, and fully finished metal objects. These items reflect several stages of production, providing a wealth of information regarding the techniques and organization of production during the Neolithic period.

The combination of raw and processed materials allows archaeologists to gain insights into how these early communities organized their production efforts. By identifying where materials were worked and the processes involved, researchers can further understand the significance of technological development at Çayönü. The recent findings indicate a specialized focus on malachite and copper, shedding light on the socio-economic dynamics of these ancient people.

Longstanding Tradition of Copper Use

Çayönü has long been a focal point for studies on early copper technology. According to Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, the use of copper and malachite in the area can be traced back to around 9100 BC, indicating a robust technological tradition that spanned approximately 2,000 years. Evidence suggests that communities in Anatolia and northern Mesopotamia were adept at working with naturally occurring copper long before metal became a standard material in daily life.

Earlier excavations have demonstrated that natural copper was manipulated through techniques such as forging and annealing, which involve controlled heating and shaping of the material. The current discovery adds a critical dimension to our understanding of prehistoric metallurgy by pinpointing a designated workspace that illustrates multiple stages of the production process.

Defining the ‘Mining Workshop’ Concept

Although the term “mining workshop” is used to describe the area, it should not be conflated with large-scale metallurgical facilities that emerged in later historical periods. Instead, the Çayönü site represents a focused working environment specifically for processing malachite and copper. The Neolithic approach to copper technology was vastly different from later practices, as it emphasized the selective handling and shaping of minerals combined with the manipulation of naturally occurring copper.

Consequently, the findings at Çayönü present a crucial chapter in the technological evolution of prehistoric communities, revealing their gradual acquisition of specialized knowledge in working with metals. This excavation not only contributes to our understanding of early civilizations but also underscores the complexity of their technological practices in mineral processing.
