AI and Digital Professions Create New Opportunities for University Applicants in Türkiye

The rising demand for advanced programs in fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, data science, and digital transformation is reshaping the landscape of higher education in Türkiye. As the results of the 2026 Higher Education Institutions Exam (YKS) become available, applicants are focusing on the placement process for these specialized areas, which have gained extraordinary traction this year. Starting from Wednesday, July 29, candidates will be able to submit their program preferences.

### Growth of Future-Focused Programs

Türkiye’s Higher Education Council (YOK), which governs university admissions and academic programs, has observed an increasing academic interest in future-oriented majors. Over the past three years, YOK has established 81 new programs dedicated to AI and information technology, indicating a significant shift toward employment-driven education. This year, 16 additional programs were introduced, including unique combinations like history and AI, philosophy and AI, as well as biotechnology and genetics.

This expansion not only diversifies educational offerings but also aligns them with evolving job market needs. The introduction of programs in digital game technologies and mobile security technologies reflects the importance of adapting to technological advancements. This academic evolution is crucial for students aspiring to enter competitive job markets that rely heavily on technological proficiency.

### The Impact of AI on Job Opportunities

Insights from Zafer Kucuksabanoglu, president of the Artificial Intelligence Policies Association (AIPA), highlight the transformative impact of AI across various sectors. “It’s not just technology that is changing; it’s the nature of work and the economy itself,” he emphasized. AI’s ability to automate routine tasks while creating entirely new professions has raised important questions about future workforce skills. Kucuksabanoglu stressed that the crux of future employability lies not in fearing job displacement but in acquiring the skills necessary to collaborate with AI.

He encourages students from all academic backgrounds—be it law, medicine, psychology, or communications—to integrate AI skills into their disciplines. This integration is becoming essential across numerous fields, indicating that professionals who are AI-competent will have a significant advantage in their careers.

### A Surge in AI-Driven Careers

Mustafa Calis, president of the Turkish Software Developers Federation (TUYAFED), notes that interest in AI has surged among university applicants this year. Educational institutions are responding with new undergraduate programs designed to meet this demand. AI’s imprint is being felt across various sectors, including healthcare, finance, and manufacturing. As companies increasingly seek AI specialists, students pursuing education in this domain will be preparing for careers that will be crucial over the next couple of decades.

Calis predicts that instead of eliminating software engineering roles, AI will transform them, placing greater value on engineers who can effectively collaborate with AI systems. The demand for talent in Turkish industries, including banking and public sectors, is on the rise, and this trend is expected to accelerate as AI technology continues to evolve.

### Future Competencies for Success

The path to success in careers related to AI and digital transformation will hinge on a range of competencies. Fields gaining prominence include machine learning, cybersecurity, robotics, data science, and advanced manufacturing, among others. To excel, future professionals should cultivate solid mathematical skills, adeptness in foreign languages, analytical thinking, and a commitment to lifelong learning.

As Türkiye continues to invest in its educational landscape, the focus on emerging technologies offers promising opportunities for students ready to adapt to the changing demands of the job market. With proper guidance and training, they can become the next generation of innovators and leaders in technology-driven fields. The integration of AI within diverse sectors will not only enhance career opportunities but also contribute to the overall economic development of the country.
