Iraq Aims for 5 Million Barrels per Day in Oil Exports via New Routes through Türkiye and Syria

Iraq is making significant strides to enhance its oil export capacity, aiming to reach 5 million barrels per day (bpd) through new pipeline routes connecting to Türkiye and Syria. Oil Minister Basim Mohammed Khudair announced that Iraq’s current exports have already increased to over 3 million bpd, with plans in place to further expand capacity.

Strategic Pipeline Development

In an announcement, Khudair highlighted that the development of two essential pipeline routes is underway, namely Basra-Haditha-Fishkhabur and Haditha-Banias. These will play a crucial role in linking Iraq’s oil-rich regions to international markets. The northern route will enable direct access to the Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline, directly connecting the southern oil fields to the Turkish border. This will facilitate oil exports via Türkiye’s Mediterranean port at Ceyhan.

Simultaneously, the western route will establish a vital link to Syria’s Banias port, contributing an additional outlet to the Mediterranean. This development not only diversifies Iraq’s export channels but also revitalizes the historic oil corridors that once linked Iraq and Syria.

Reducing Dependence on Hormuz

The move to expand oil export routes is particularly strategic given Iraq’s aim to lessen its reliance on the Strait of Hormuz. This narrow waterway has been a focal point of regional tensions, and augmenting export possibilities through alternative routes can improve Iraq’s energy security. The government is proactively seeking ways to mitigate risks associated with Hormuz disruptions, especially in light of escalating geopolitical strife.

In recent months, Iraq’s oil output was significantly affected due to the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran. Reports indicate that output dropped from 3.3 million bpd to about 1.3 million bpd during the conflict, although recovery efforts have shown promising results in July and August. The development of new pipeline infrastructures comes as a timely response to ensure a more reliable flow of crude oil to international markets.

Future Implications for Iraq’s Oil Sector

As of now, Iraq possesses approximately 145 billion barrels of proven oil reserves. The substantial investment in infrastructure and diversity of export routes reflect the government’s commitment to bolstering its oil sector’s resilience. By connecting to both Türkiye and Syria, Iraq is not only enhancing its capabilities but also positioning itself as a significant player in the global oil market.

The completion of these pipelines is expected to occur in the near future, paving the way for increased exports and reaffirming Iraq’s standing as one of the leading oil producers. As these developments continue to unfold, the Iraqi government remains focused on creating an environment conducive to sustained growth in the oil export sector, with the ultimate goal of achieving its ambitious target of 5 million bpd.
