Istanbul Airport Set to Launch Its Fourth Primary Runway on September 18

Istanbul Airport is set to enhance its operational capabilities with the introduction of its fourth main runway on September 18, 2026. The grand opening is expected to be attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, underscoring the significance of this development. This new addition will not only increase the airport’s overall runway count but also enhance efficiency in air traffic management.

Enhancing Istanbul Airport’s Capacity

According to Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu, Istanbul Airport currently facilitates access to over 340 destinations through collaborations with more than 110 airlines. The airport previously operated with three main runways and two auxiliary ones, mainly aligned in a north-south orientation. The addition of the fourth main runway will make a total of six runways, which is crucial for accommodating the rising number of flights and improving passenger experience.

The upcoming runway will be the first of its kind at Istanbul Airport to be oriented east-west, measuring an impressive 2,820 meters (9,252 feet) in length and 45 meters in width. This design aims to improve scheduling flexibility, particularly beneficial for domestic flights and those heading eastward. Uraloglu emphasized that the new runway will streamline operations and reduce taxi times as well as airborne durations, leading to significant savings in fuel and time.

Operational Efficiency and Flexibility

The introduction of the new runway is expected to enhance operational diversity, especially during unfavorable weather conditions. Uraloglu mentioned that the east-west orientation will maximize the safety margins for takeoffs and landings. It will also improve on-time departure rates, which are crucial for maintaining the airport’s reputation as a leading global hub.

In April 2025, Istanbul Airport implemented Europe’s first Triple Independent Parallel Runway Operation, which significantly improved its operational capabilities. With the addition of the new runway, Uraloglu asserted that the airport’s capacity, efficiency, and flexibility would be further bolstered. The close proximity of the runway to hangar areas will allow for quicker and more independent general aviation operations, enhancing overall airport functionality.

Positive Impacts on Air Travel

The new infrastructure is poised to have a lasting impact on air travel from Istanbul, benefiting not just airlines but also passengers. By shortening the time required for taxiing and airborne phases of flights, travelers can expect quicker departures and arrivals. Additionally, enhanced safety measures will provide peace of mind during adverse weather, further solidifying Istanbul Airport’s commitment to maintaining high standards of air travel.

As Istanbul Airport grows in stature and capacity, it reinforces its role as one of the busiest airports in the world. The addition of the fourth main runway is another leap in its ongoing mission to become a central hub for global air travel, ultimately positioning Turkey as a key player in the international aviation landscape.

In conclusion, the launch of the fourth main runway is expected to significantly enhance the operational efficiency of Istanbul Airport, benefitting airlines and travelers alike while further establishing it as a pivotal international travel hub.
