The Turkish Ministry of National Defense (MND) made headlines at the recent SAHA Expo 2026 by showcasing its Yıldırımhan long-range ballistic missile. This innovative missile represents a significant leap in Turkey’s defense capabilities, reflecting the country’s commitment to enhancing its military technology.

Technological Advancements in Ballistic Missiles

During a press conference, Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler emphasized the importance of their newly developed missile, stating that it marks Turkey’s first liquid-fueled rocket system capable of hypersonic speeds. This new missile not only boasts impressive speed but also stands out for its remarkable range of up to 6,000 kilometers, making it one of the most advanced systems in Turkey’s arsenal. Güler attributed this achievement to the technological foundations laid two years ago at the MND’s Research and Development Center.

Engine Composition and Design Features

The Yıldırımhan missile utilizes unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine as its fuel and dinitrogen tetroxide for oxidation. This sophisticated combination allows for both increased efficiency and control over the missile’s performance. It is designed to carry a payload of up to 3 tons, enabling it to be used in various military capacities. The successful integration of liquid-propellant propulsion systems has been a focus for the Turkish defense sector for nearly a decade, reflecting ongoing investments in hypersonic technology.

North to Production and Challenges Overcome

According to Nilüfer Kuzulu, the director-general of the MND’s R&D Center, the journey from laboratory-scale production to mass manufacturing has been challenging yet rewarding. The initial stages of developing this fuel required testing under controlled conditions before advancing to serial production. This shift not only showcases the growing capabilities of Turkey’s defense manufacturers but also highlights the nation’s commitment to achieving self-sufficiency in military technology.

Kuzulu pointed out that developing this particular type of fuel posed a significant technical hurdle, as it had not been produced within Turkey prior to this project. “Creating this fuel is extremely complex, and it was not available domestically before,” she noted, indicating the pioneering efforts involved in this initiative.

Future Testing and National Defense Strategy

The Yıldırımhan Missile System has successfully passed laboratory tests and is now set to enter field testing. MND sources confirmed that plans for ground trials are progressing according to schedule, underscoring the project’s momentum. Looking ahead, the Ministry is determined to further bolster Turkey’s defense infrastructure through indigenous advancements and the reinforcement of strategic deterrence capabilities.

The MND reaffirmed its dedication to developing national systems as part of its National Technology Initiative, which aims to support the ongoing progress of Turkey’s defense industry.
