Turkey is increasing its diplomatic efforts to reach a resolution regarding the situation in the Black Sea. The country is actively engaging in discussions with key stakeholders to align their conflicting positions and facilitate a path toward peace.
Efforts to Find Common Ground
During a joint press conference in Baku with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized that negotiations are ongoing with a particular focus on the Black Sea situation. “Our work is currently underway, with focused attention on the Black Sea. We are negotiating with all parties involved and have put forth several proposals. We have received feedback from them and are endeavoring to harmonize these views to create a framework that is mutually acceptable,” Fidan noted.
He expressed optimism that with genuine political will and goodwill from all concerned parties, a consensus could be achieved. The Minister highlighted Turkey’s commitment to taking significant steps towards reaching an agreement that would serve the interests of all involved.
Commitment to Peace
Fidan stated that recently, Turkey has intensified its efforts to reach a comprehensive agreement and is hopeful that these initiatives will help bring the ongoing discussions to a successful conclusion. “As our president has emphasized from the very beginning, even the worst peace is better than war itself. Turkey will continue to exert all possible efforts to ensure peace,” he affirmed.
He also drew attention to an alarming increase in attacks on civilian vessels in the Black Sea, underscoring Turkey’s proactive measures to prevent the conflict from escalating into this crucial maritime region. Fidan reiterated Turkey’s adherence to the Montreux Convention and its commitment to the Black Sea Grain Initiative as crucial components in maintaining stability in the area.
Escalation Risks and Changing War Dynamics
According to Fidan, the nature of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict has evolved significantly over the past year, shifting from a “war of attrition” to a more destructive phase. “The war has transformed; there are virtually no targets left untouched. We are witnessing an alarming rise in civilian casualties,” he stated.
He warned of the necessity to curb any further escalation of the conflict to prevent dire repercussions not only within the region but potentially extending to other European nations. The urgency of the situation is compounded by the reality that the conflict could geographically expand, affecting broader stability in Europe.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has repeatedly asserted that Turkey is resolute in its mission to facilitate peace and bring about an end to the turmoil caused by the ongoing war.
