Turkey targets single-digit inflation through a three-year economic strategy.

Türkiye’s latest Medium-Term Program (MTP) is geared towards addressing the chronic issue of high inflation, with a target of bringing it down to single digits. This comprehensive economic strategy for 2027-2029 seeks to dismantle the persistent inflationary trends that have disrupted market stability for years.

Breaking the Cycle of Inflation

As of August, Türkiye’s annual consumer inflation rate soared to 31.51%, prompting urgent action from the government in Ankara. The MTP emphasizes the need for a coordinated approach, integrating monetary, fiscal, and revenue policies to sustain a disinflation trajectory over the three-year period. This holistic strategy is essential to combat the entrenched inflationary pressures that have been affecting consumers and businesses alike.

The economic framework aims to reduce annual consumer inflation from an anticipated 28.4% by the end of this year to a more manageable 21% in 2027, subsequently declining to 13.5% in 2028 and reaching the goal of 9% by the conclusion of 2029. Such incremental goals are designed to gradually instill confidence among consumers and investors while stabilizing the economic landscape.

Central Banking and Policy Measures

The Central Bank of Türkiye (CBRT) is committed to maintaining its focus on inflation control while endorsing a floating exchange rate system. This strategy allows the forces of supply and demand to dictate currency values, providing a more dynamic and responsive economic environment. The MTP outlines the intent to deploy all available monetary tools to temper domestic demand while enhancing supply policies that stimulate market competition.

An essential aspect of the MTP is its initiative to redefine price-setting behavior among businesses. The program encourages enterprises to formulate their pricing strategies based on future government inflation targets, rather than past inflation figures. This shift is crucial to dismantling the ongoing cycle of price increases that has plagued the economy, ensuring that businesses are more aligned with sustainable price setting.

Targeting Agricultural Stability and Transparency

Furthermore, the program delineates a strategy for state purchase prices of crops, emphasizing the importance of public finances and market conditions. By preventing the indexation of prices to previous inflation rates, the MTP aims to foster a more resilient agricultural sector tailored to regional needs. This focus on agriculture is vital for ensuring long-term food security in Türkiye, which is increasingly vulnerable to global economic fluctuations.

In addition, improving communication channels is a priority for anchoring inflation expectations within the established targets. Efforts will also be made to enhance public awareness of platforms that provide price information across supermarket chains, boosting transparency in consumer markets. This initiative not only empowers consumers but also holds businesses accountable for their pricing practices.

As Türkiye embarks on this ambitious path to economic stability, the success of this Medium-Term Program will largely depend on its execution and the collaboration of various stakeholders. By resolving the foundational issues of inflation, Türkiye aims to pave the way for sustainable economic growth and enhanced quality of life for its citizens.
