Turkey’s Fidan cautions about the risks of fresh attacks on Iran

On Friday, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stressed the necessity of cautious diplomacy concerning recent tensions with Iran. He articulated that any further military action against Iran would only deepen regional conflicts and urged for peaceful solutions through dialogue rather than warfare.

Significant Diplomatic Engagements in Istanbul

During a pivotal meeting in Istanbul, Fidan engaged with foreign ministers from Egypt, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Germany, France, Britain, and Italy. The discussions revolved around ongoing conflicts, including the war in Iran and recent attacks on Saudi Arabia by Iran-aligned Houthis. This summit marked the first collaborative effort among these nations, commonly referred to as the Regional Four (R4) alongside the European Union’s E3 members, plus Italy.

Consensus Against Military Action

Post-meeting, Fidan emphasized the consensus among the attendees that an attack on Iran would escalate the situation and asserted that military interventions are not viable solutions. He declared, “No one supports this at the moment,” clearly indicating that collective diplomacy is seen as the preferred pathway to peace.

In alignment with this sentiment, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot highlighted that renewed hostilities between Iran and the United States would lead to widespread economic repercussions, including increased oil prices. This commentary comes in the wake of concerning reports suggesting that U.S. and Israeli forces are preparing for potential strikes against Iran’s crucial infrastructures post the upcoming congressional midterm elections.

U.S. and Iranian Dynamics

Adding to the complexity, previous statements from former U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that no attacks on Iran would commence before the elections, given ongoing productive discussions between the U.S. and Tehran aimed at concluding their prolonged conflict. Trump noted that while a quick resolution is possible, a gradual approach might be better suited for the geopolitical landscape.

Turkey, a NATO ally, continues to act as a mediator, engaging with Washington and Tehran and advocating for a halt to military engagements. Fidan mentioned discussions around measures to prevent the conflict from spreading, although he refrained from providing detailed strategies during the briefing.

Prospects for Future Negotiations

Following this vital diplomatic engagement, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul conveyed that Germany, France, and Britain are prepared to negotiate with Iran to establish limitations on its nuclear armament capabilities, alongside pledging support for Saudi Arabia and Yemen. The emphasis remains on achieving diplomatic resolutions instead of escalating military confrontations in an already fragile region.

As discussions continue, the international community watches closely, recognizing the crucial role diplomacy plays in mitigating tensions and fostering a stable regional order amidst persistent hostilities.
