Turkey’s Space Ambitions: Roketsan’s Role in Independent Access to Orbit

As Turkey enhances its capabilities in the space sector, Roketsan is at the forefront, working on advanced satellite launch systems to secure its independent access to outer space. The move aims to amplify Turkey’s position in the global space economy, especially as investments in satellite technology rise significantly.

Developing Independent Launch Platforms

Roketsan’s CEO, Murat Ikinci, discussed the company’s dedication to creating indigenous platforms capable of carrying heavy payloads into orbit. In preparation for the upcoming 77th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Turkey, he confirmed that significant progress is being made on the Simsek 1 and Simsek 2 satellite launch systems. These systems have been developed with support from the Defense Industries Agency (SSB), underscoring Turkey’s commitment to boosting its national security and technological prowess.

Ikinci noted the challenges posed by leading nations in the aerospace sector that often safeguard their technologies—such as navigation, propulsion, and thermal management. To overcome this, Roketsan has established a center of excellence since 2020, fostering collaborations with universities and industry players. This strategic approach aims to position Turkey as a vital contributor to the global space landscape.

Validating Homegrown Space Solutions

Since 2016, Roketsan has conducted numerous probe rocket tests, validating its capabilities in spaceflight. This initiative has been propelled by the global trend of technology withholding by established aerospace leaders, which has motivated Turkey to cultivate its own sovereign technology. According to Ikinci, the successful launch of the Simsek 1 and the subsequent Simsek 2 signifies that Turkey is making strides in establishing a proven track record in space ventures.

The Simsek 1 program aspires to deliver a 400-kilogram payload into a 500-kilometer orbit, while the more advanced Simsek 2 can support a payload of 1.5 tons into orbits reaching 700 kilometers. This advancement indicates a growing confidence in Turkey’s technical capabilities and operational readiness for international partnerships.

Building a Robust Aerospace Supply Chain

To support its manufacturing objectives, Roketsan has cultivated a network of around 2,500 business partners, most of whom are currently engaged in missile production. The company is also focused on upgrading the skills of its suppliers, enabling them to contribute to global space projects. This vision of creating an extensive ecosystem is designed to ensure that Turkey can compete effectively in the marketplace, as emphasized by Ikinci.

Moreover, Roketsan collaborates with a diverse array of organizations, including academic institutions, public entities like the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TUBITAK), and the Turkish Ministry of Industry and Technology. This collaborative spirit is essential for bolstering Turkey’s capabilities in the space sector.

Aligning with Turkey’s National Space Program

As a key contributor to Turkey’s National Space Program, Roketsan is dedicated to developing platforms for payload delivery to space—an essential component of this ambitious initiative. Ikinci stated that coordination among various institutions and allied nations is critical for advancing Turkey’s lunar objectives and deep-space exploration efforts.

Roketsan’s investment in the IAC 2026 event, set to take place in Antalya, highlights its commitment to fostering new scientific collaborations. This initiative will not only accelerate advancements in aerospace technology but also enhance Turkey’s standing in the global space community.
