Wildfires have erupted in the Antalya province of Türkiye, prompting urgent evacuations as fierce winds exacerbate the situation. Local authorities have mobilized resources to manage the rapidly spreading flames, which pose a significant threat to nearby communities.
Evacuations and Disruptions
The wildfires ignited on Monday evening in the Aksu district of Antalya and quickly advanced toward residential zones. In response, officials evacuated residents from over 254 homes in both Aksu and the adjacent Kepez area. The situation escalated further when a critical highway connecting Antalya to Isparta was closed temporarily to ensure public safety. According to reports from Anadolu Agency, more than 2,000 homes in the vicinity experienced power outages, causing additional distress among residents. Although the fires caused significant damage, medical personnel reported two people were hospitalized due to leg injuries, and six others received treatment for smoke inhalation at the incident site.
Rescue of Animals
As flames and choking smoke engulfed the region, efforts extended beyond human safety to include the well-being of animals. More than 100 dogs were rescued from an animal shelter in Aksu and relocated to safer conditions, thanks to the initiative taken by the Antalya Municipality. This act underscores the community’s commitment to the welfare of all its residents, both human and animal alike, during this challenging time.
Firefighting Efforts and Strategies
A robust firefighting operation has been launched to combat the inferno, with the deployment of at least five firefighting aircraft, 10 helicopters, 110 fire engines, and around 600 personnel on the ground. Firefighters are also tackling blazes in neighboring provinces such as Adana and Mersin. In Adana, authorities reported that several fires in districts like Çorlu, Mansurlu, and Dağılcak were brought under control. Nevertheless, the struggle continues, and extinguishing operations remain ongoing, with estimates suggesting around 132 hectares of forest land have suffered damage due to the fire.
