Emirates Layover for the Soaring Englishman Next

Jack Mitchell, a seasoned British jockey, is radiating enthusiasm as he prepares for his upcoming stint in the UAE. Recently, he clinched his first Group 1 victory, an achievement that has further fueled his competitive spirit. At 37 years old, Mitchell is not only a familiar face in the racing world but also someone who is excited about the new opportunities ahead.

Recent Achievements and Future Aspirations

Mitchell’s recent win with Saddadd in the Grosser Preis von Baden in Germany was significant. Marking a turning point in his career, this victory was achieved in the prestigious colors of the late Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Mitchell arrives in Dubai on October 29, looking forward to working with the well-respected Simon Crisford stable. “I’ve been with Simon for some time, and our relationship has flourished. There’s been a lot of success, and I hope that continues,” said Mitchell. He will operate as a freelance jockey while being available for Crisford when needed.

Despite having only ridden twice in Dubai to date, Mitchell has a fond history with the city. His last appearance was during the 2023 Dubai Gold Cup, where he placed seventh aboard the German horse Sisfahan. “I’ve always loved Dubai; it’s a remarkable place,” he shares. After several years focused on his career in the UK and parenting, he is now ready to seize this exciting opportunity. “At 37, I thought it was time to explore new horizons,” he added.

The Significance of His Group 1 Win

Mitchell’s recent Group 1 triumph, achieved under trainer Roger Varian, carries special meaning. It took a moment for the win’s magnitude to resonate fully with him. “Given our training and the horse’s form, we were confident. I had a good sense of the track and competitors,” he recalled. Surprisingly, he felt less anxious going into this race than in previous high-stakes situations. “I knew I was victorious but still needed confirmation when I noticed the cameraman beside me. That moment was euphoric!”

After this landmark win, Mitchell is keen to spotlight his flying ambitions. He’s not only the UK’s first jockey to hold a pilot’s license but also intends to explore flying opportunities while in Dubai. The less grueling riding schedule in the UAE appeals to him as he balances work and personal life. “Riding three or four times weekly is appealing compared to the relentless routine in the UK,” he stated.

Preparing for a New Adventure

As Mitchell gears up for this challenging chapter, he is also considering various activities to enjoy during his time in Dubai. He plans to try padel, golf, and possibly enroll in a flight school. “I think I’ll find my time in Dubai rejuvenating,” he mentioned. With the backing of a top agent, he is set to bring his extensive experience with both Arabians and thoroughbreds to the UAE racing scene.

Lastly, despite the shift to racing on dirt, Mitchell remains unfazed. “It’s just another challenge in our profession as jockeys,” he concluded. With his combination of optimism and experience, both the racing community and his fans eagerly await what lies ahead for Jack Mitchell in the vibrant UAE racing circuit.
