Palestinians Reflect on Their Connections to the UAE: ‘Both Nations Are My Home’

Members of the extensive Palestinian community in the UAE recently united to express their solidarity and appreciation for their connections to the Emirates at the inaugural ‘Emirates Loves Palestine’ event. This gathering showcased the shared cultural bonds and the deep affection the UAE harbors for the Palestinian people.

A Celebration of Culture and Community

The conference center at Expo City Dubai was adorned with vibrant scenes as families donned traditional hand-embroidered thobes. Attendees included grandparents, parents, and children eager to immerse themselves in Palestinian culture. Students, like 15-year-old Sultan Mohamed, attended with their families, emphasizing the significance of such gatherings: “This event is so important to Palestinians because it shows us how the UAE loves us, and takes care of Palestinian people,” he stated. The festival featured traditional folk music, allowing participants to enjoy a taste of home through beloved Palestinian delicacies like freshly baked bread and sweets.

Many in the gathering were born in the UAE and have never had the chance to visit their ancestral homeland. This disconnect highlights the importance of events that bring together their rich heritage. As Kholoud Ferwana, a mother of four, expressed about her children, “I want them to see how much the UAE loves Palestine.” The event served not only as an exhibition of cultural pride but also as a reminder of the strong ties that both communities share.

Support from the UAE Government

Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak, the UAE Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, graced the event with his presence, honoring the impressive turnout of over 50,000 attendees. He remarked on the significance of the gathering as a testament to the affection the UAE demonstrates for Palestine and its people. He stated, “In this gathering, which expresses the UAE’s love for Palestine, we send together a message of pure support and affection.” The UAE has been actively involved in supporting Palestine through various initiatives, including the provision of food, medical assistance, and shelters amidst ongoing crises.

The UAE’s commitment to Palestine extends not just in words but in action, with around $3 billion allocated as aid to Gaza between 2023 and 2025. Such generosity and support have cemented the relationship between these two communities, illustrating a shared commitment to peace and prosperity.

A Platform for Cultural Exchange

The festival also focused on highlighting Palestinian culture, featuring stalls with traditional crafts, clothing, and delicacies. Attendees enjoyed treats such as ma’moul cookies and basboosa, immersed in an environment celebrating their heritage. Jordanian-Palestinian parents Leen Elayyan and Anas Abu Shashiek expressed the importance of exposing their young children to Palestinian traditions through food and music, stating, “We want our children to engage with traditional food, clothes and music.”

Ambassador Abeer Al Ramahi of Palestine in the UAE acknowledged the event as a gesture of gratitude from the Emirates to the Palestinian people, highlighting the importance of such cultural exchanges. “The numbers reflect the huge Palestinian community who live in this land. We are so grateful as a people to celebrate Palestinian heritage and culture together in the UAE,” she said.

In summary, the ‘Emirates Loves Palestine’ event was not just a gathering; it was a vibrant celebration of heritage, community, and mutual support. By sharing culture and history, both the UAE and Palestinian attendees reinforced their deep-rooted connection, fostering an environment of respect, love, and understanding that resonates throughout the region.
