Korea has made significant strides in the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), currently ranking twelfth in a global analysis conducted by Microsoft. The report found that over 40% of the Korean population utilized AI technologies in the second quarter of the year. This data indicates a growing trend in AI adoption, particularly in the realm of generative AI among younger demographics.

The report revealed a notable increase in the generative AI usage rate among Koreans aged 15 to 64, which rose by 3.5 percentage points compared to the previous quarter. This growth led Korea to ascend four positions in the global ranking by the end of June. The enhanced interest and use of AI technologies reflect a broader acceptance and integration into daily life for many Koreans, signaling a positive trend in technological engagement.
Global Trends in AI Adoption
On a global scale, the usage of generative AI also saw a rise, increasing from 17.8% to 18.8% between the first and second quarters of the year. The countries leading this charge include the United Arab Emirates, which boasts a remarkable adoption rate of 73.3%. Following UAE, Singapore and Ireland have also shown considerable interest, with usage rates of 64.3% and 49.9%, respectively. A significant disparity in AI adoption exists between the Global North and Global South. As per the findings, the adoption rate in the Global North stands at 28.8%, whereas the Global South lags behind at just 16.2%. This 12.6 percentage point gap highlights persistent challenges faced by developing nations, particularly in terms of infrastructure and digital literacy. The Global North encompasses wealthier, industrialized regions such as the United States, Japan, and Korea, while the Global South includes countries with lower income levels across Africa, Latin America, and parts of Asia.

The report from Microsoft emphasizes that the systemic challenges hindering the Global South’s adoption of AI technologies are of grave concern. Limited access to electricity, insufficient internet connectivity, and a lack of digital skills create barriers that prevent many from reaping the benefits of generative AI. Until these fundamental issues are addressed, the advantages of AI will continue to be unevenly distributed, further widening the gap between developed and developing regions.
