Kalyon Inşaat, a prominent Turkish construction firm, has announced the commencement of work on the United Arab Emirates’ inaugural high-speed railway. This significant endeavor is part of one of the largest transportation infrastructure projects within the Gulf region.
Partnership in Progress
Kalyon Inşaat is collaborating within an international consortium to develop the Abu Dhabi section of the Abu Dhabi-Dubai High-Speed Rail Project, which has been entrusted to them by Etihad Rail, the main developer and operator of the UAE’s national railway system. The consortium also includes UAE-based National Projects and Construction, Trojan Tunneling, and China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC). This strategic partnership assembles a diverse range of expertise and resources aimed at delivering this ambitious project.
The entire high-speed railway initiative represents a $13 billion investment by Etihad Rail, with plans to establish an extensive passenger rail network covering approximately 900 kilometers across the UAE. Once operational, the connectivity between Abu Dhabi and Dubai is expected to be dramatically enhanced, reducing travel time from around 90 minutes to just 30 minutes.
Engineering Innovations
The high-speed railway will be capable of reaching speeds up to 320 kilometers per hour, positioning it as the UAE’s first high-speed rail line. Currently, the existing railway systems in the nation operate at around 200 km/h. The Abu Dhabi-Dubai high-speed line will span roughly 150 kilometers, and the contract outlines the construction of approximately 97 kilometers of railway tracks, plus four strategically placed stations.
A particularly noteworthy engineering feature of the project will be an 11.2-kilometer twin-tube tunnel, which will serve as a crucial component of the railway’s design. Project completion is slated for 2031, a timeline that reflects the scale and complexity of the undertaking.

Murathan Kalyoncu, Chair of Kalyon Inşaat, expressed pride in the project, emphasizing its pioneering role in the region. He pointed out that this venture highlights the company’s engineering prowess and its expanding international footprint. According to Kalyoncu, the railway is a strategic investment for the Emirates and a remarkable milestone in global railway engineering.
In his remarks, Kalyoncu stated, “We will leverage the engineering skills and experience acquired through large-scale infrastructure projects in Türkiye and globally, bringing them to the UAE’s first high-speed railway. We are committed to successfully representing our country in international markets.” This ambitious project not only illustrates Kalyon Inşaat’s capabilities but also contributes to elevating the UAE’s infrastructure to a new level of efficiency and speed, further enhancing economic connectivity in the region.
