The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has recently lifted entry and visa restrictions for Ugandan citizens following the termination of Uganda’s Ebola outbreak. This decision signals a significant step toward restored travel and economic relations between the two nations.
UAE Eases Travel Restrictions
On Saturday, the UAE’s National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) announced the eased restrictions in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP). Officials stated that the UAE’s decision to reinstate normal entry protocols is contingent upon Uganda successfully completing the internationally mandated monitoring period without any new Ebola cases.
Earlier this year, on June 6, the UAE imposed strict travel restrictions in response to reports of Ebola in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and South Sudan. During that period, visa issuance for nationals from these countries was suspended, and travelers from these regions were barred from entry unless they had spent a minimum of 21 days outside the affected areas.
While Uganda has now been relieved from these restrictions, similar measures remain intact for the DRC and South Sudan, highlighting the ongoing public health concerns in those areas.
Significant Diplomatic Engagements
This recent development follows high-level discussions between Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Adonia Ayebare, and UAE officials. Mr. Ayebare expressed gratitude for the lifting of travel restrictions, emphasizing the cordial and productive dialogues with His Highness Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister.
Mr. Ayebare revealed that the UAE would send a delegation to assess the readiness of Uganda’s Civil Aviation Authority and other relevant bodies before fully reinstating travel agreements. He extended his appreciation to the UAE government for taking this crucial step to bolster economic ties between the two nations.
The easing of restrictions comes as Uganda officially declared the end of its Ebola outbreak on July 28, following a rigorous 42-day surveillance period marked by no new cases. The outbreak initially began on May 15, when cases were traced back to the DRC. Over the course of the outbreak, Uganda reported 20 confirmed cases, with 18 individuals recovering and tragically, two fatalities.
Monitoring and Future Preparedness
In light of these developments, NCEMA, alongside MoHAP and ICP, affirmed their commitment to ongoing monitoring of Ebola and related health concerns on both a regional and international level. They will continue to assess health protocols in alignment with global risk evaluations. This approach ensures that the UAE remains vigilant and responsive to any future health crises that may arise.
