United Arab Emirates University Introduces the 2026 Al Ain Edition of the Desert by Design Competition for Desert Architecture and Urbanism

The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) is set to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2026 by introducing the Desert by Design Competition, focusing on Desert Architecture and Urbanism specifically for the Al Ain Edition. This competition aims to engage students and professionals in a rewarding design challenge centered around the unique features of the Al Ain region.

Emphasizing Al Ain’s Unique Character

At the core of the Desert by Design competition is a commitment to highlighting the Al Ain Region’s environmental diversity and cultural heritage. Participants are encouraged to create designs that resonate with the area’s natural climate, rich cultural roots, and future aspirations. The initiative serves as an opportunity for students from various higher education institutions across the UAE, as well as professional designers, to present compelling proposals that reflect the unique characteristics and possibilities of Al Ain.

Prof. Mohamed Al Marzouqi, Dean of the College of Engineering, emphasizes the significance of the region’s historic and environmental characteristics, stating, “Al Ain has a distinctive identity formed over centuries, with a deep-rooted cultural, urban, and environmental essence.” He believes that the competition will empower participants to articulate their ideas through contemporary architectural expressions that are responsive to the future.

Connecting Theory with Practice

This competitive platform is not just about design; it represents a broader commitment to linking academic knowledge with real-world community and environmental issues. By facilitating this initiative, UAEU aims to enhance the role of students and professionals in devising innovative solutions that address sustainable architecture and urban development tailored to desert environments. The program is specifically crafted to foster creativity and promote interdisciplinary collaboration among participants from various fields, including architecture, urban design, and landscape architecture.

With themes revolving around culture, heritage, and climate, the competition features two distinct categories: one for students and another for early-career professionals. This structure allows for diverse perspectives while also nurturing new talent in the field of architecture and urbanism.

Prizes and Participation Details

The Desert by Design competition presents an enticing opportunity for participants, with a total prize pool valued at AED320,000. Aimed at encouraging wide participation, the registration process is completely free, which helps to attract inventive ideas from varying disciplines. The competition is open to students currently enrolled in or graduates from universities in the UAE, ensuring a robust and diverse applicant pool.

Registration for the competition will remain open until October 4, 2026, with the final submissions due by October 20, 2026. A jury will evaluate the entries throughout October, leading up to an awards ceremony and exhibition scheduled for November 2026. This timeline allows participants not only the chance to showcase their designs but also to receive valuable feedback and recognition for their creative efforts.

The Desert by Design Competition is poised to play a significant role in fostering new architectural visions for the Al Ain region, bridging the gap between culture and future sustainability. It is a unique opportunity for students and professionals alike to contribute meaningfully to the evolving landscape of desert architecture and urbanism.
