PowerChina Leads Renewable Energy Initiatives in Egypt

As the world shifts towards sustainable energy solutions, the Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina) is making significant strides in renewable energy projects in Egypt. With an impressive portfolio geared towards wind energy, the company is focused on enhancing the local energy landscape and supporting Egypt’s commitment to increasing its renewable energy capacity.

Development of Wind Power Projects

PowerChina is currently implementing a series of wind power projects that collectively boast over 1.8 GW of capacity. These initiatives include the fully operational 500 MW Amunet Gulf of Suez Wind Project, alongside two additional, under-construction ventures: the Gulf of Suez Wind Project, which has an impressive 1.1 GW capacity, and the Ras Ghareb Wind Project at 202.5 MW. This ambitious plan is part of Egypt’s broader objective to transition towards renewable energy sources and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, underlining a growing collaboration between China and Egypt as they celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations.

Challenges and Strategic Solutions

The construction of the Amunet wind farm was not without its hurdles. Workers faced extreme temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, strong winds, and complex geological conditions. To combat these challenges, PowerChina employed strategic methods such as optimizing concrete temperature management, scheduling pouring during cooler hours, and closely monitoring wind conditions while installing turbines. These efforts led to the Amunet project receiving its acceptance certificate ahead of schedule, alongside the prestigious 2025 RoSPA Health and Safety Award for exceptional safety standards.

Local Partnerships and Economic Impact

Leveraging its global experience and local understanding, PowerChina is also initiating energy storage and manufacturing projects that aim to underscore the importance of local collaboration. The local contractor Elalamya General Contracting has partnered with PowerChina, initially as a subcontractor for the Amunet project and later expanding across the portfolio. This collaboration not only strengthens local businesses but also signifies a shared commitment to sustainable development, as Elalamya’s leadership expressed enthusiasm for the long-term partnership.

Furthermore, PowerChina recently initiated operations on a new energy storage manufacturing facility in Ain Sokhna, covering an area of 50,000 square meters. This facility aims to bolster local manufacturing and talent development, contributing significantly to Egypt’s clean energy supply chain. It will mark Sungrow’s first manufacturing base for battery energy storage systems in the Middle East and Africa, playing a pivotal role in energizing local economies.

Job Creation and Local Benefits

Since establishing a presence in Egypt in 2012, PowerChina has played a crucial role in job creation, generating over 2,000 direct positions and more than 10,000 indirect jobs through its projects. The organization has also committed to professional training, equipping more than 350 individuals with skills in both traditional and renewable energy sectors, thus enhancing the workforce’s capabilities in quality control, health, safety, and environmental management.

By engaging with numerous Egyptian suppliers and contractors in areas like engineering services, construction materials, and legal consultancy, PowerChina is not only directing substantial investment into the local economy but also ensuring that its projects have a lasting impact on the community. As the partnership continues to evolve, the prospects for economic growth and sustainable energy development in Egypt look more promising than ever.
