Basketball Update 2026: Bryce Cotton Calls for Overhaul of NBL Drug Policy, Advocates for Cannabis Reform—Responses and Reactions.

NBL star Bryce Cotton is advocating for a change in the league’s cannabis policy, urging it to take cues from the NBA. The National Basketball League (NBL) adheres to Sport Integrity Australia’s (SIA) National Anti-Doping Policy, which prohibits both natural and synthetic cannabinoids during competitions. Currently, players who test positive for cannabis can face bans of up to four years, a policy Cotton argues should be revisited.

NBL’s Current Drug Policies

The SIA policy aligns with the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) list of banned substances, which most Australian sports organizations follow. However, with the changing perceptions around cannabis, many are questioning whether such stringent measures are warranted. As of 2023, the NBA no longer screens for cannabis, a significant shift that Cotton believes the NBL should emulate.

“We should consider changing the policy,” Cotton stated during an interview on SEN South Australia’s The Run Home with Kymbo and Chad. He described cannabis as “not a performance-enhancing drug,” emphasizing the need to rethink its prohibition in a sport like basketball.

Player Support for Policy Change

A recent survey conducted during the NBL off-season indicated that a significant majority—73%—of players favor revising the league’s cannabis restrictions. This unanimous sentiment reflects a broader acceptance of cannabis, with many players advocating for a dialogue around its place within the sport. Some players explicitly pointed to cannabis as a substance warranting policy change, highlighting a growing sentiment within the league.

Under the current rules, THC levels are only monitored in samples collected on game days. For instance, Sydney Kings’ captain Xavier Cooks was suspended earlier this year for a second THC-related offense shortly after leading the Kings to a championship. His ban took place entirely in the off-season, illustrating the potential disconnect between the timing of tests and actual gameplay.

Bryce Cotton’s Legacy and Focus Ahead

Cotton, who has been named NBL MVP six times, is eyeing a historic seventh title in the upcoming season. He prepares to match the legendary Andrew Gaze’s all-time record of seven MVP awards, and this upcoming accomplishment adds another layer of intrigue to his career. Cotton and his team, the Adelaide 36ers, kick off their campaign against Melbourne United on Saturday night.

Despite the continuous comparisons between himself and Gaze, Cotton remains grounded, expressing that he feels “no pressure” to meet these expectations. He respects Gaze’s accomplishments and aims to build his own legacy while contributing to critical conversations around the league’s policies.

Cotton’s call for reform in the NBL’s cannabis policy intersects with a changing cultural landscape, as more sports leagues reconsider longstanding regulations. With his influential platform, Cotton may very well champion a shift that aligns traditional sports values with modern practices. As the NBL prepares for another season, the dialogue around cannabis, fueled by players’ voices, remains at the forefront of discussions about the future of the sport.
