Saudi Arabia claims it has thwarted a Houthi ballistic missile aimed at Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia’s air defense systems successfully intercepted a ballistic missile that was launched by the Houthi rebel group and targeted the capital, Riyadh, early on Saturday. This incident highlights ongoing tensions in the region and reinforces the efforts of the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen to protect its territories from external threats.

Interception of Houthi Missile in Riyadh

According to a statement from coalition spokesperson Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki, the Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces took immediate action once the missile was detected. This prompt response ensured the safety of Riyadh, a city with a population exceeding 8 million residents and citizens. Al-Maliki condemned the Houthi militia for its determined attempts to target civilians and critical infrastructure, denouncing these actions as part of a systematic and deliberate campaign of terror.

The missile interception is not an isolated event; the Saudi air defenses have been active in the face of multiple Houthi attacks. Maj. Gen. Al-Maliki mentioned that other attempts were made to strike various locations, including Baysh, Taif, Farasan, and Yanbu. However, each of these threats was neutralized by the coalition’s air defenses. The coalition has expressed its determination to protect civilians and infrastructure, asserting the right to take necessary defensive measures in accordance with international humanitarian law.

Escalating Tensions and Response

The Houthis have intensified their military activities, claiming multiple operations involving ballistic and cruise missiles as well as drones aimed at critical targets within Saudi Arabia. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree reported specifically that one operation targeted so-called “sensitive sites” in Riyadh while another aimed at facilities of the Saudi Aramco oil company in Yanbu. These claims emphasize the volatile nature of the conflict and the ongoing threats posed by the militant group.

In tandem with these developments, Saudi Civil Defense issued alerts within Riyadh and the surrounding area of Al-Kharj for the first time during the current series of warnings. However, the authorities did not disclose specific details regarding the nature of the threats, leaving residents concerned about potential future attacks.

Recent Attacks and Casualties

The Houthi militia’s activities have not only targeted military installations but have also led to civilian casualties. Just days before this missile interception in Riyadh, an attack took place in Taif that resulted in one death and injuries to two other individuals from falling debris caused by an intercepted drone. Such incidents underline the potential risks posed by missile and drone attacks, which have surged in recent times.

The situation remains tense as both sides brace for further developments in the ongoing conflict. The Saudi-led coalition has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguard its citizens while continuing to confront Houthi aggression. As international observers watch closely, the need for a diplomatic resolution becomes increasingly urgent to alleviate the suffering endured by civilians caught in the crossfire.
