Democrats must confront a crucial reality: while the Republican stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been ineffective, the Democratic approach has also faltered. Historically, the party has offered unwavering support to Israeli governments, even when their actions have conflicted with American interests and ethics.
The Call for a Two-State Solution
For many years, Democrats have advocated for a two-state solution but have failed to leverage their influence effectively to bring it to fruition. Now is the time to harness that leverage to end the occupation and forge a path toward two states that grant full political and legal rights to everyone involved. This necessitates reevaluating taxpayer support and conditioning arms sales to Israel based on its compliance with international standards.
Recently, a growing number of Democratic representatives have begun to recognize that maintaining the status quo is no longer viable. In a notable shift, forty Democrats voted against the transfer of specific military equipment to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, a significant increase from just 15 who did so the previous year. This shift signals an awakening within the party that may be pivotal in reshaping American foreign policy.
The Reality on the Ground
The situation in the West Bank is dire. Violent settlers act with impunity, and increasing complicity from Israeli security forces exacerbates the plight of the Palestinian people. Israel’s effective annexation of the West Bank is forcing Palestinians into increasingly confined areas. Netanyahu’s administration has undermined the Palestinian Authority, which recognizes Israel’s right to exist, further isolating the Palestinian people. Observing the conditions in the West Bank highlights a troubling situation reminiscent of apartheid, while Gaza remains devastated and humanitarian crises persist.
Through personal visits to Israel and the West Bank, I have witnessed the alarming expansion of illegal settlements on land intended for a future Palestinian state. I’ve met Palestinian families forcibly displaced from their homes and spoken with those who have been directly affected by violence on both sides. The stark realities of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza are equally troubling and underscore the need for immediate action focused on justice and peace.
Acknowledging Shared Responsibility
Both Republican and Democratic administrations have contributed to the current state of affairs. President Trump’s decision to move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem and to cut diplomatic ties with the Palestinian Authority set a damaging precedent. Furthermore, President Biden’s failure to reverse Trump-era policies, particularly amid the rise of the most extremist Israeli government in history, represents a serious misstep. While reaffirming Israel’s right to defend itself, Biden has yet to adequately utilize U.S. leverage to influence Israel’s actions, especially as Gaza suffers from collective punishment.
This status quo not only hampers U.S. interests but also tarnishes America’s credibility internationally. Unconditional support for Israel contradicts the values we advocate, increasing skepticism toward our motives among global allies. As American sentiments shift, particularly in light of Netanyahu’s brutal policies, the risk of rising antisemitism compounds the complexities of this situation, highlighting the urgent need for a nuanced approach.
Charting a New Path Forward
Accepting the existing situation is no longer an option. Democrats must take a proactive stance that balances support for both Israel and Palestine, moving beyond past failures. To pave the way for a viable two-state solution, the next Democratic president should carefully recognize a Palestinian state based on specific, clear benchmarks and principles, including fair elections.
Moreover, ending U.S. taxpayer-funded support without accountability must become a priority. Any arms agreements with Israel should be contingent on compliance with international laws, ensuring no offensive weapons are sold unless they are tied to a tangible process leading to an end of the occupation. Collaborative efforts with regional allies, akin to the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative, could foster a framework for lasting stability.
While this path may encounter significant resistance, both from some sectors of Israeli governance and various domestic groups, Democrats must remain resolute. The 2024 elections hinge on demonstrating moral clarity and strategic consistency. Voters will be wary of candidates lacking a principled approach to these critical humanitarian issues, especially those who previously supported actions undermining peace and justice. Moving forward requires a commitment to a balanced, effective foreign policy that prioritizes human rights and mutual respect.
