Luxor, known as the world’s largest open-air museum, is revered for its vast array of ancient tombs, temples, and monuments. However, in under a year, this historic Egyptian city will experience an extraordinary celestial event.

On August 2, 2027, a total solar eclipse will sweep across parts of North Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Among all locations, Luxor will witness the most extended period of totality, lasting an impressive six minutes and 23 seconds. According to NASA, this duration will be the longest observable until 2114. As the event draws closer, it has captured the attention of astronomers and tourists alike.

Path of Totality

Next summer’s eclipse is expected to be the second-longest of the 21st century, falling just behind the July 2009 phenomenon. However, the 2009 eclipse’s maximum totality was best viewed over the Pacific Ocean, far from the mainland. For the upcoming eclipse, the trajectory will curve in from the Atlantic, traversing Spain, Gibraltar, and northern Morocco, and then extending through Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Somalia before concluding in the Indian Ocean. Significant cities like Cádiz in Spain and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia lie directly in this path of totality, which will span approximately 259 kilometers (161 miles) in width.

While many cities will experience darkness during the eclipse, none can match the scenic backdrop that Luxor offers. Positioned near the famed Valley of the Kings and Queens, this historic city is built atop the ancient metropolis of Thebes. It will provide an exceptional setting for the longest land-based total solar eclipse since 1991. Notably, this event presents an opportunity for scientists and enthusiasts like Professor Roger Davies from Oxford University, who will witness what many are calling the “eclipse of the century.” He notes, “Six minutes and 23 seconds is significant; you will be able to see planets and the brightest stars, and I hope we’ll spot much more.”

The area boasts minimal cloud cover during the summer months, increasing the likelihood of clear skies for the eclipse. However, heat can pose challenges, as daytime temperatures often rise above 41°C (105°F). As the partial eclipse begins just after 11:40 a.m. local time and reaches maximum totality at 1:05 p.m., the intense heat can create complications for observers and their equipment.

Astronomers predict a substantial influx of visitors wanting to experience this rare event firsthand. However, hotel accommodations are rapidly filling up, with many properties near Luxor already booked. Reports indicate skyrocketing hotel prices, with substantial increases observed across popular destinations like Iceland and Spain.
