More than 40 members of the U.S. Congress have urged Secretary of State Marco Rubio to advocate for the release of Sama Safi, a 20-year-old American detained by the Israeli military since June. As a Palestinian American student, Safi’s health is said to be declining severely during her time in custody, which the legislators describe as “appalling conditions.”
Concerns Over Safi’s Well-being
In their letter to Secretary Rubio, the lawmakers, led by Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, emphasized the urgent need for action. They expressed that every day Safi remains wrongfully imprisoned puts her at escalating risk of life-threatening health complications. “Her life is at risk on your watch,” they stated, urging the Secretary to leverage every resource available to secure her release. The letter highlights that Safi deserves the medical care necessary for her chronic condition and the chance to return to her family and studies.
Six U.S. senators, including prominent figures like Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, supported this initiative alongside numerous House members. Safi was taken from her home in the occupied West Bank during a predawn raid and has been held without charges. She was among a group of young women detained as part of a larger Israeli crackdown on anti-occupation activism in June.
Alarming Violations in Israeli Detention Facilities
Reports indicate that Safi is suffering significantly while incarcerated. The letter from lawmakers pointed to her chronic condition, Familial Mediterranean Fever, which has been exacerbated by irregular access to medication.
