Doha, Qatar: The 216th Independence Day of Mexico was celebrated in Doha on Tuesday, showcasing the growing relationship between Mexico and Qatar. The event brought together Qatari officials, diplomats, and members of the Mexican community, emphasizing the spirit of cooperation and friendship that continues to flourish between the two nations.
A Gathering of Dignitaries
Among the attendees were notable figures like H.E. Mohammed bin Ali bin Mohammed Al Mannai, Minister of Communications and Information Technology; H.E. Ambassador Ibrahim Fakhro, Director of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and Jassim Al-Asmakh, Director of the American Affairs Department. The celebration was graciously hosted by Mexican Ambassador to Qatar, H.E. José Guillermo Ordorica Robles. A moment of silence was observed to honor the late Father Amir H.H. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and all those who lost their lives in the recent tragic events affecting Qatar and the region.
Ambassador’s Address
In his address, Ambassador Ordorica underscored Mexico’s dedication to principles of inclusion, social justice, and shared prosperity under the leadership of President H.E. Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s first female president. He stated, “Under her leadership, we are committed to strengthening cooperation and solidarity among nations,” reflecting a shared vision for both Mexico and Qatar. The ambassador expressed strong support for Qatar during what he described as a challenging year for regional peace and stability, reaffirming the importance of diplomatic efforts in promoting understanding.
Reflecting on Mexico’s historical independence journey, which commenced on September 16, 1810, he noted the annual celebration as a testament to the resilience and diversity of the Mexican populace. “Our history has faced numerous hardships, yet it also teaches us that unity and hope for the future can empower us to overcome challenges,” he stated.
Opportunities for Collaboration
Ambassador Ordorica emphasized Qatar’s role as a critical partner for Mexico, citing various avenues for enhanced economic collaboration. With Mexico’s robust connectivity, skilled workforce, and access to international markets, he illustrated the potential for strengthening bilateral ties. He remarked, “There’s no question that Qatar has established itself as a significant partner for Mexico, especially under the leadership of Amir H.H. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.”
He also announced that Mexico City would soon host the Third Meeting of the Bilateral Political Consultations Mechanism, featuring Minister of State for Foreign Affairs H.E. Sultan bin Saad bin Sultan Al Muraikhi. “This high-level engagement will allow us to deepen our political dialogue, explore new areas for cooperation, and encourage reciprocal visits,” he added.
Cultural Exchange and Celebration
The event illuminated the Qatar–Mexico–Canada Year of Culture 2026, which aims to present Mexican culture in Qatar while fostering a spirit of cultural exchange. The evening’s program included the well-known Grito de Independencia civic ceremony, traditionally celebrated on September 15 to mark the beginning of Mexico’s struggle for independence.
The festivities concluded with a ceremonial cake cutting and a captivating concert by the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra. The musical performances featured pieces such as Danzón No. 2, Suite Mexicana, and La Bikina, beautifully showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Mexico. This celebration not only commemorated Mexico’s Independence Day but also strengthened the cultural and diplomatic ties between Mexico and Qatar.
