According to recent scheduling data from Cirium, an aviation analytics firm, the airline operates flights to 11 cities in the U.S. from its hub at Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH). However, Las Vegas remains a notable exclusion from this impressive lineup.
Ambitious Plans for Las Vegas
Back in January 2017, Qatar Airways expressed its intention to launch a direct route from Doha to Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) in Las Vegas. The airline aimed to commence operations on January 8, 2018, using Boeing 777-200LR aircraft, and it planned to operate four weekly flights in each direction. This ambitious move would have made Qatar Airways the first Gulf carrier to directly serve Las Vegas, as its U.S. network had already expanded significantly over the years.
The then-CEO Akbar Al-Baker highlighted the airline’s strategy by emphasizing the growing demand for travel from the East through the Doha hub. He stated, “Growing our western United States network is crucial for the airline, given the exponential increase in passenger demand.”
Diplomatic Challenges Halting Progress
Despite the initial enthusiasm, Qatar Airways never realized its plans to operate services to Las Vegas. The anticipated route fell victim to the 2017 Gulf blockade, which resulted from escalating diplomatic tensions between Qatar and several neighboring nations, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Consequently, Qatari registered aircraft were barred from utilizing the airspace of these countries, severely limiting the airline’s operational scope.
As a result of these restrictions, Qatar Airways had to adjust its growth strategies, pausing plans for various routes, including the eagerly awaited Las Vegas connection. Destinations like Rio de Janeiro and Santiago de Chile also faced delays or cancellations due to the geopolitical climate.
Current Landscape of Qatar Airways’ U.S. Routes
Today, Las Vegas continues to be absent from Qatar Airways’ flight roster. As of July, the airline operates 418 flights to various U.S. cities. Among these, New York (JFK) leads the pack with 93 flights per month, followed by Dallas (DFW) with 62 and a host of other cities like Chicago, Houston, Miami, and Seattle receiving daily or more frequent service. On the other hand, less frequented destinations, such as Atlanta and San Francisco, encounter fewer connections.
Even without the Las Vegas route, Qatar Airways remains a significant player in the American aviation market, catering to a diverse array of destinations. Booking data indicates that only 2,775 passengers traveled between Doha and Las Vegas the previous year, averaging just eight travelers daily. In comparison, Las Vegas does handle a variety of long-haul flights to Europe, with London Heathrow (LHR) seeing the highest flight frequency, followed by Amsterdam and Frankfurt. Thus, while Qatar Airways may not fly to Las Vegas, the city still retains long-haul service, albeit primarily to European destinations.
