Türkiye’s UN Permanent Representative, Ahmet Yildiz, recently commended Syria for its commitment to confronting the remnants of its chemical weapons program, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with the global community. His remarks came during a UN Security Council meeting focused on the ongoing disarmament efforts concerning Syria’s chemical weaponry.
Praising Syria’s Initiative
At the meeting, Yildiz referred to the chemical weapons issue as one of the most significant legacies stemming from the Assad administration. However, he expressed a sense of optimism regarding recent developments, stating, “We have a genuine cause for optimism.” He highlighted that meaningful advancements in addressing the chemical weapons problem require a practical and coordinated approach involving both Syria and the international community, tailored to the realities on the ground.
Yildiz welcomed a significant decision made by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in July, which restored Syria’s rights and privileges within the organization. He pointed out the recent agreements made regarding the verification of chemical weapons facilities, marking a crucial step in the disarmament process.
Enhancing Inspection Efforts
The representative also celebrated the deployment of an OPCW Technical Secretariat team to Syria for the inspection of Category 3 chemical weapons destruction. He expressed anticipation for their forthcoming report, which will provide insights into the progress made in dismantling these hazardous materials. However, Yildiz acknowledged that existing challenges hinder the process of identifying, securing, and preparing chemical substances for destruction, citing the secretive nature of the previous regime’s chemical weapons program as a primary obstacle.
Moreover, Yildiz warned that recent Israeli airstrikes targeting potential sites affiliated with chemical weapons could exacerbate the difficulties in the disarmament process. These attacks pose risks of releasing dangerous materials into civilian areas and may destroy vital evidence necessary for accountability related to past chemical weapon assaults.
Türkiye’s Continued Support
Despite these challenges, Yildiz reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to aiding Syria in enhancing its technical and logistical capabilities in accordance with OPCW standards. He reiterated Turkey’s strong backing for Syria-led endeavors aimed at addressing the chemical weapons issue. Yildiz concluded with a hopeful vision of a future for Syria: “Our shared goal should be a Syria that is permanently free of chemical weapons.”
Through collaborative and well-coordinated efforts, Turkey aims to support Syria in overcoming the obstacles that have long plagued the disarmament of chemical weapons, leading to a safer and more stable region.
