Turkey has officially entered the competition to land astronauts on the Moon.

Türkiye is making significant strides in its quest for space exploration, aiming not just for satellite operations but also setting its sights on the Moon. This ambitious journey has been decades in the making, shaped by a series of satellite launches that have bolstered Türkiye’s position within the global space community.

The Evolution of Türkiye’s Space Program

The roots of Türkiye’s space exploration can be traced back to the 1990s when foundational work began with Earth observation satellites. Notably, BILSAT-1, launched in 2003, marked Türkiye’s entry into satellite technology. This was followed by RASAT in 2011, which was the first fully domestic Earth observation satellite. RASAT’s launch aboard a Russian Dnepr rocket symbolized a significant milestone as it exceeded its expected operational lifespan by lasting 11 years.

The advancement continued with Göktürk-2 in 2012, built by Turkish Aerospace Industries, and the strategic Göktürk-1 in 2016. These achievements helped pave the way for the establishment of the Turkish Space Agency (TUA) in 2018, signifying a unified vision for space exploration. By 2020, Türkiye got serious about its ambitions with the announcement of its National Space Program, laying out a comprehensive 10-year roadmap. Recently, the launch of the high-resolution İMECE satellite in 2023 showcased Türkiye’s technological progress, while the placement of TURKSAT 6A—a domestically manufactured telecommunications satellite—into geostationary orbit in 2024 illustrated the country’s capability to handle complex space missions.

Embarking on the Lunar Journey

As part of its National Space Program, Türkiye initiated the Lunar Research Program (AYAP) to join an exclusive group of nations aiming for lunar exploration. The program represents a pivotal step following the historic spaceflight of Turkish astronaut Alper Gezeravci, who ventured to the International Space Station in early 2024. With the lunar program, Türkiye seeks to transcend satellite technology and crewed missions, venturing into deeper space exploration.

A significant milestone was achieved on August 31, 2026, when Türkiye signed the Artemis Accords in Washington, making it the 71st country to join NASA’s international collaboration for lunar exploration. This partnership is grounded in shared principles for transparency, scientific collaboration, and resource utilization in space. Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacir expressed that signing the accords marks a transformative phase for Türkiye’s space program, promising enhanced cooperation with the United States in satellite technology and human spaceflight initiatives.

Future Missions: AYAP-1 and Beyond

The flagship mission, AYAP-1, is being developed by TUBITAK UZAY and aims to reach any lunar orbit approximately 100 kilometers above the lunar surface. This mission will execute a complex hard landing using a hybrid propulsion system designed in Türkiye. To maintain a connection with ground stations, AYAP-1 will feature a tracking and telemetry transponder supplied by Thales Alenia Space.

Originally targeted for 2026, the AYAP-1 launch is now scheduled for 2027 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Following this mission, plans for AYAP-2 will focus on achieving a softer landing on the Moon and deploying a rover, utilizing Türkiye’s domestic launch capabilities. As part of the broader Artemis framework, Türkiye is expected to contribute significantly to lunar exploration missions aimed at establishing a sustained human presence on the Moon and preparing for future Mars endeavors.

As Türkiye readies itself to host the International Astronautical Congress in Antalya this October, it stands among the global leaders in space exploration, drawing attention to its ambitions and innovations. With a commitment to international collaboration, Türkiye is not just a participant in the race for lunar exploration but is also poised to make its unique contributions.
