Turkey’s Tayfun Missile Launches Again from the Black Sea Coast as Block 2 and 3 Begin Serial Production

Turkey’s military capabilities are set to strengthen further with recent developments surrounding the Tayfun missile. Designed by the Turkish defense company Roketsan, the latest test of the Tayfun missile from the Black Sea coast marks a significant milestone. As the Tayfun variants, Blocks 2 and 3, enter serial production, Türkiye takes a decisive step toward enhancing its defense proficiency.

Successful Test Firing of Tayfun Missile

Roketsan and the Turkish Defense Industries Presidency (SSB) successfully conducted a test firing of the Tayfun missile on October 1, 2026, from Rize-Artvin Airport. Authorities implemented strict security protocols during the test to ensure safety, though specifics regarding which variant was fired and its intended target remain undisclosed. This successful launch underscores the Turkish defense sector’s commitment to advancing indigenous military technology.

The timing of this test is crucial, especially given that Roketsan announced the commencement of serial production for its newer missile variants, Blocks 2 and 3. With Block 3 deliveries expected this year, there is an anticipation of bolstered capabilities for the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF), gradually integrating these advanced systems into their operational arsenal.

Features of Tayfun Block Variants

Roketsan’s CEO, Murat Ikinci, highlighted that the Block 3 variant is optimized for targeting naval vessels and fortified installations. With a unique warhead design that enhances penetration capabilities alongside standard explosive effects, Block 3 aims to increase its effectiveness against challenging targets. This versatility positions the Tayfun family of missiles as a strategic asset for Türkiye, reinforcing its naval and land-based military operations.

Indeed, the Tayfun missile family has gradually begun to meet the demands set forth by the National Defense Ministry. The series is designed to bring a multi-faceted approach to Türkiye’s military strategy, allowing for an increased ability to address a range of threats.

Block 3’s Historical Test and Specifications

A noteworthy achievement occurred earlier this year when the Tayfun Block 3 missile successfully struck a moving unmanned surface vessel (USV) in the Black Sea, demonstrating a significant capability for a ballistic missile. This marked both a first for Türkiye and one of the few instances worldwide where a ballistic missile was equipped with a seeker head. Such advancements underscore the technological edge that the Tayfun project brings to the Turkish military.

The missile’s specifications are impressive: with an operational range exceeding 280 kilometers, a length of 6.5 meters, a diameter of 610 millimeters, and a weight of approximately 2,300 kilograms, the Tayfun missile is engineered to retain high accuracy—within 10 meters—while also boasting anti-jamming capabilities. Its hypersonic speeds provide resilience against enemy air defenses, making it adaptable for strikes under various weather conditions and times of day.

The successful test of the Tayfun missile further bolsters not only Türkiye’s national defense framework but also emphasizes its ambitions to transform into a competitive player in the global arms market. As the nation continues to develop and deploy innovative military technologies, the Tayfun project epitomizes Turkey’s unwavering commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities in an increasingly complex security landscape.
