UAE Secures Fourth Place Worldwide in Nuclear Facility Security

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has made significant strides in nuclear security, earning a commendable fourth place among 48 countries evaluated for their defenses against sabotage. This ranking emerges from the latest edition of the Nuclear Threat Initiative’s Security Index, which highlights the UAE’s commitment to safeguarding its nuclear facilities and materials.

Impressive Rankings in Nuclear Security

In addition to its top-tier ranking for protection against sabotage, the UAE shares the 15th spot among 154 assessed countries and territories regarding measures to prevent the theft of nuclear materials. With a score of 85 out of 100—two points higher than its recalibrated 2023 baseline—the UAE demonstrates notable advancement in its nuclear security policies. These scores underline the nation’s proactive efforts to enhance its security measures and preserve the integrity of nuclear resources.

Comprehensive Evaluation Metrics

The Nuclear Threat Initiative, in collaboration with Economist Enterprise, developed a comprehensive index that evaluates various parameters crucial for nuclear security. The assessment includes several dimensions, such as physical protection mechanisms, cybersecurity measures, adherence to international norms, and the capability of domestic authorities. The UAE has particularly excelled in these areas, reflecting its commitment to not only maintaining but also continually improving its nuclear security framework.

Significant Improvements in Security Measures

Recent results indicate that the UAE has seen remarkable improvements in its security and control systems. The nation’s score in this domain soared from 66 in 2023 to 86 in 2026, showcasing its focused approach to enhancing nuclear facility protection. Contributing factors for this progress include updated requirements for nuclear facility security, improved cybersecurity strategies, stringent personnel vetting processes, and robust measures to enhance preparedness and resilience against potential threats.

A Commitment to Continuous Improvement

Hamad Al Kaabi, the director general of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation, emphasized that these positive results reflect the UAE’s long-term dedication to a robust nuclear security system. He remarked that the evolving nature of nuclear security necessitates continuous vigilance and adaptation by regulators, operators, and relevant national entities to effectively address emerging risks.

Mr. Al Kaabi affirmed the UAE’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its capabilities by learning from global best practices and fostering collaborative relationships with national and international partners. This dedication ensures that the UAE meets—and strives to exceed—the highest nuclear security standards.

Additionally, the 2026 index recognizes the UAE as one of twelve nations emerging as new leaders in global nuclear security. This designation indicates the UAE’s sustained improvements in domestic security, its support for international counterparts, and its increased engagement with global institutions focused on nuclear safety. The nation’s proactive stance solidifies its reputation as a key player in the global landscape of nuclear security, setting a standard for other nations to follow.
